Bartonella spp. bacteremia in patients with neurological and neuro-cognitive dysfunction E. B. Breitschwerdt*, R. G. Maggi, W. L. Nicholson, N. A. Cherry, and C. W. Woods From the Intracellular Pathogens Research Laboratory, Center for Comparative Medicine and Translational Research, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC; Rickettsial Zoonoses Branch, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA; and Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC Abstract: We detected infection with a Bartonella species (B. henselae or B. vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii) in the blood of six immunocompetent patients who presented with a chronic neurological or neuro-cognitive syndrome including seizure, ataxia, memory loss, and/or tremor. Each of these patients had substantial animal contact or recent arthropod exposure as a potential risk factor for Bartonella infection. Additional studies should be performed to clarify the potential role of Bartonella spp. as a cause of chronic neurological and neuro-cognitive dysfunction. jcm.asm.org/cgi/content/abstract/JCM.00832-08v1?view=long&pmid=18632903I just had a thought: might there be so many similarities between tick-borne illnesses because they have receptors for like prophages?
