Monitoring Lyme Disease A Lyme disease prevention program is back in operation. Doctors and veterinarians are being encouraged to submit suspicious ticks to the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg in order to help prevent the spread of the disease. Central R.H.A. Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Shelley Buchan says over time, the areas in which infected deer ticks are found is expanding beyond the south east part of the province. The purpose of the prevention program is to see if there is an increase in deer ticks outside that area. Buchan notes if people find ticks they think should be submitted to the surveillance program, they are to contact their local veterinarian. She advises Lyme disease is not common, but treatment is crucial in the early stages. www.pembinavalleyonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7917&Itemid=311
